Leanna Joyner has more than ten years of experience working for organizations that make a difference. She has worked as an employee and contractor for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, WNCW 88.7FM, Leadership Greater Washington, and North Carolina Outward Bound, among others. Her expertise includes marketing and communications, program development, event organization, and volunteer coordination.
A versatile writer, she writes about the outdoors, conservation, history, sustainability and stories of human interest. Her work has been featured in Appalachian Trail Journeys, Blue Ridge Outdoors, the Washington Business Journal, and the Charleston Regional Business Journal. She has written a guide to Civil War sites along the Appalachian Trail to be published by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy in 2011-2012.

Leanna is an avid volunteer; she currently serves the Partnership for the National Trails System as a co-chair to the Conferences and Workshops Committee. Leanna’s past volunteer commitments have been related to education and the outdoors – as an English as a Second Language tutor, a Girl Scout leader, a Girls on the Run coach, and a trail maintainer for the Carolina Mountain Club.
Leanna hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2003 and nearly half of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2010. The rewards she enjoys while in nature on our National Scenic Trails are those she hopes others will benefit from through her continued work with conservation-based organizations.
